The T-55 was developed in the eary 1950's under the designation Obiekt-155. Developed at UVZ, Nizhny Tagil and manufactured atKharkov, the T-55, though resembling the earlier T-54 was in fact a complete redesign of the earlier tank with few components being unmodified. The T-55 was the mainstay of the Soviet tank park from the time of its introduction until superseded by the T-72 in the 1970’s. The T-55 was in production from 1958 until 1975 (1963 per KhPZ book) (in latter years mainly for export), long after the later T-62 had ceased production. As such the tank has one of the longest service lives of any tank ever built. As with the T-54 series the T-55 underwentseveral modiications and ppgrades during its service life and numerous special varants were manufactured on the T-55 chassis. The T-55M, introduced in 1983, was fitted with the 9K116 Bastion missile system, fired through the standard rifled gun barrel, together with composite turret armor and a new V-55U engine deveoping 620hp. The T-55M1 was the T-55M but fitted with a V-46-5 engine developing 690hp. Most modifications were carried out at the No 3 Tank Repair Plant. The T-55MV introduced in the 1980's was fitted with ERA as originally fitted to the T-64 and T-72 in an attempt to maintain reasonable capability for the T-55 series. The T-55AD Drozd was introduced in small numbers in 1983, providi a 40 degree defensive arc by means of a control and missile system mounted on the turret. The T-55MV upgrade carried out in 1985 included the fitting of ERA blocks on the turret and hull. The T-55 is still in service with some Russian tank units.
Model 1954
The initial production model T-55 was not fitted with the NBC shielding which typified the later T-55A. It lacks the raised hatch areas which accommodated the lead lining incorporated in the later model.
