Fort IX, known as “Czerniaków” (and also as “Dąbrowskiego” and “Sadyba”) was built in the 1880s, on a plan similar to a pentagon. In the early 20th century, it was decided to demolish it, and it was therefore blown up, leaving only the barracks and a few underground forts. These forts became an important point of the defence of Warsaw in 1939, and were also important during the Warsaw Uprising. After the war, the fort was cutting off Powsińska Street, so the eastern part was transformed into a park, and the western part, which belongs to the Museum of the Polish Army, became a storage place for military equipment. At the end of the 1990s, two museum branches opened here: the Muzeum Polskiej Techniki Wojskowej (Museum of Polish Military Technology) and the Katyń Museum. (Source: Warsaw Tour). These are both branches of the Muzeum Wojska Polskiego.
The responsibilities of the Polish Museum of Military Technology are to collect heavy equipment of the Polish Army and foreign armies, to conduct exploration and extraction activities, and the organization, supervision and participation in preservation and restoration of the fort and its equipment. (Source: Muzeum WP). There is an open-air exhibition of aircraft, armoured vehicles and artillery weapons covering the Polish Army and Polish Military Aviation.
The Katyn Museum features objects left by the POWs murdered in 1940 and recovered in Katyn, Kharkov and Miednoye during exhumation works carried out in 1991-94, plus documents related to the 1940 crime and its victims, and photographs.
The Warsaw branches of Muzeum Wojska Polskiego are being reorganised and a new museum is planned – check opening times before visiting.

IS-2s served with the Polish 4th and 5th Heavy Tank Regiments in 1944 and 1945. At the end of the war Poland had 26 still in service and these formed the post-war 7th Heavy Tank Regiment; this IS-2 is likely to have been one of those surviving vehicles.
