On Sunday 9 May 1993 in Moscow the Poklonnaya (Paklonna) Hills memorial was officially opened by Boris Yeltsin as the culmination of the celebrations of victory over Germany in May 1945. A huge display of Soviet military hardware was assembled at the memorial complex at Victory Park in the City. The focus of the exhibition was directed towards equipment of the Second World War era, but the Russian Army also provided some examples of modern artillery and multiple rocket launcher systems. The Air Force was represented with a static display of WW2 fighter aircraft. A small number of German, Japanese and British armoured vehicles was assembled to balance the display, which was attended by thousands of Muscovites. Equipment for the Exhibition was provided by the Russian Army, from the Kubinka collection and from some smaller collections. Much of the equipment on display had been immaculately restored, though the vehicles had their hatches welded shut and small external fittings removed. This exhibition was preparatory to the opening of a completely new museum on the site. The museum building itself was officially opened on 9 May 1995 and houses an indoor display of military dioramas. Prior to this the exhibition display was extensively revised and moved to an area behind the museum building. There are now new displays encompassing army, air and naval exhibits around the park, including a new armoured vehicle display area.

This Matilda was one of those supplied to Russia by Britain under the wartime Lend-Lease system. It was found lying on a river bottom since 1942, with even its ammunition intact. It was restored at Kubinka from 1993 to May 1995, after which it was transferred here. It is fitted with a mock up turret (source: R. Fleming).

Text in original Preserved Tanks In Russia publication:
The Soviet Army received 2,007 examples of the 75mm M4A2 from America during the war and they saw extensive use. They were well liked by their crews and at least one of the coveted ‘Hero of the Soviet Union’ decorations was won by an M4A2 commander. This one is in a poor condition with damaged suspension, left-hand track and gun barrel, and has had its engine compartment plated over. According to a report this Sherman has been recently removed; its current whereabouts are unknown. It is fitted with steel cleat track.
Text in Preserved Tanks In Russia Update:
In the mid 1990s this Sherman was moved from the Snegiri Museum to Poklonnaya.

This German LT-38 was found in dense forest in the Novgorod region by a local and had probably been abandoned there by German forces during the war. It was confiscated by militiamen who found a buyer from one of the Baltic republics and prepared it for illegal export to Germany. Customs officers in Saint Petersburg opened the container (marked ‘scrap iron’), discovered the tank and seized it. It was restored in the workshops at Kubinka before being transferred here.
