The Fort Lewis Military Museum was originally established in 1971 in a two-storey barracks on main Fort Lewis. In July 1973 it was relocated and rededicated in the old Fort Lewis Inn, where it is now. The aim of the museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret the military history of the Pacific Northwest, from the first major expedition to explore the region by Lewis and Clark in the early 1800s, to modern day Fort Lewis.
The larger exhibits are on display in an outside display park, across the courtyard from the museum building. These exhibits include wheeled and tracked vehicles, a train, missiles and artillery pieces.
The museum is currently closed.

This markings on its transmission cover indicate that the cover was manufactured by American Steel Foundries, Granite Works (“[G]”), Illinois; it is a late production version (“E8543”, source: P.-O. Buan) with serial number 0818.
