The ZSU-23-4 “Shilka” was originally developed in 196' alongside the ZSU-37-2 "Enisay" SPAAG which did not enter series production. The ZSU-23-4 was introduced into service with the Soviet Army in 1965 as a replacement for the ZSU-57-2. It continued in production until 1983. When introduced, the ZSU-23-4 was a highly effective anti-aircraft weapons system. The turret mounted quadruple 23mm gun system with its on - board radar was particularly effective against helicopters and slow flying aircraft. The ehicle was based on the GM-575 chassis, with a V-6R engine developing 280hp and giving the vehicle a top speed of 50km/hour and a range of 450km. In addition to service with the Soviet Army the ZSU-23-4 was widely exported, particularly to the Middle East. The system underwent several modifications (totalling at least 20). The main modifications were the ZSU-23-4V produced 1968-69, the ZSU-23-4V1 (1970-71), ZSU-23-4M1 (1971-72), ZSU-23M3 (1977-78). The ZSU-23-4 series is still in service worldwide today, the latest variant being the ZSU-23-4M5. In Russian Army service it was replaced by the 2S6M.
