The Kirov Tank Plant is located in south-west Saint Petersburg. It has a small museum, with models and other exhibits, which is normally closed to the public. The Kirov Factory dates back to 1932 when a tank design bureau for development of the USSR's T-28 tank was established at the Leningrad-based Krasny Putilovets Plant. In 1935, after the assassination of Sergey Kirov, the factory was officially renamed Factory No. 185 (S.M. Kirov). Shortly after the German invasion, Tank Factory No. 185 was evacuated from Leningrad to Chelyabinsk in the Urals in July 1941.
