The “Obiekt 126” or T-126SP prototype was originally developed at the Kirov plant from 1940 in answer to a requirement for a new 14 tonne light tank with a 45mm gun as main armament but with armour protection comparable with the new T-34 medium tank series. The T-126 (SP) was delivered to Zavod No 174 where it was used as the prototype from which the limited series production T-50 was produced.
T-126SP
The T-126SP featured heavily sloped armour of welded construction, torsion bar suspension and a new diesel engine developing 250hp. A significant 150 rounds of 45mm ammunition were carried within the tank.

T-50
The T-50 was an interesting tank concept, combining the armament of a light tank with armour protection and overall weight similar to contemporary German medium tanks. The original specification was developed between two competitive design bureaus as a replacement for the ageing T-26 series. The ultimately successful prototype was developed by I. S. Bushnev and L. S. Troyanov from 1939 at the Kirov plant in Leningrad as the “Obiekt 126” or T-126 (SP) The other was developed by a team led by A. S. Yermolev under the ultimate direction of Zh. Ya. Kotin, under the designation "Obiekt 211", a single prototype of which was built. The T-126SP was accepted for series production as the T-50 in April 1941, but production only began after the outbreak of war, with just 50 T-50s being produced at Zavod No 174 before its evacuation from Leningrad to Omsk in late 1941. Production commenced at the relocated Zavod No 174 in Omsk in early 1942. In total Zavod No 174 produced just 65 T-50’s during the period 1941-42, of which only 15 were produced after evacuation of the plant to Omsk, as the plant ran out of engine components and thereafter converted to T-34 production. A small number of T-50's were fitted with the ATO-41 flame-thrower instead of the DT hull machine gun. The T-50 served with the Red Army primarily in the Karelian Isthmus.
