The T-80 MBT was developed by the Kotin / Shashmurin / Popov bureau at the Kirov Tank Plant in Leningrad under the designation Obiekt 219, the production model T-80 entering service with the Russian Army in 1976. The tank was produced in several versions, primarily at the Kirov Plant in St. Petersburg, which ceased production of the T-80 in 1991 and the majority being built at the Malyshev Plant in Kharkov, now in independent Ukraine, which still produces the T-80UD and the Ukrainian T-84.

Obiekt 219R

The Obiekt 219R was the series production prototype for the T-80B MBT developed at LKZ in St.Petersburg. The tank was a variant of the original T-80 fitted with the Kobra ATGM system, as adopted on the T-80B.

T-80BV

The T-80BV was introduced in 1985. It was an improved T-80B with uprated main armament and fire control. The main armament could now fire the AT-11 Refleks ATGM through the barrel. The tank was also fitted with ERA blockswhich completely changed the appearance of the tank. Originally fitted with a 1000hp GTD-1000 gas turbine engine, the tank was later fitted with a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine. Thermal sights were fitted from 1992.…70km/h 370km 809kVT (1100hp) engine. The upgrade was also done by tank repair plants.

T-80U

The T-80U was introduced into service with the Soviet Army in 1985. It was manufactured at LKZ in Leningrad (until 1991) and now only at Omsk in Russia. It is fitted with a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine developing 920kW (1250hp) gas turbine engine. The T-80U was the last “Soviet” MBT before the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. The T-80U has been a very successful tank, let down only by its high powered but high maintenance and thirsty engine. The T-80U remains Russia’s mainstay MBT at the time of writing, as the T-90 has not been purchased in any quantity by the Russian Army. The T-80U has a maximum speed of 60km/h (70?) and road range of 400km. The Ukraine continues also continues to produce the T-80, as the T-80UD fitted with a conventional 6 TD 1000hp diesel engine, Ukraine also having modified the tank as the T-84.

Obiekt 644

The Obiekt 644 was a later development of the T-80B, fitted with the V-46-6 engine from the T-72 tank series as an alternative to the T-80's gas turbine engine, which though powerful, was subject to excessive fuel consumption and maintenance constraints.
