Development of the T-44 series began in 1943 at the KB-520 design bureau in Nizhny Tagil under the supervision of A. A. Morozov as a replacement for the T-34 series. Early prototypes were armed with the 85mm D-5T gun (T-44-85) and the 122mm D-25 gun (T-44-122), these early prototypes having an entirely different turret from the series production model. Series production of the T-44 began at Zavod No75 (the renamed original Zavod No 183 in Kharkov which was recaptured and rebuilt in late 1943) and in total 965- higher tanks are known to have been built between 1944 and 1947. Early models used T-34 tracks, these being later replaced by T-54 type tracks. The T-44-100 was developed to prototype stage late in 1945, with alternative 100mm LB-1 and D-10T armament, two DT machine guns and a 12.7mm DShK AA MG but it was not series produced. Although 1XX were produced at Zavod No75 before May 1945, The T-44 was delivered too late to take part in the war in Europe, however, the first batch of T-44's was shipped to the Far East in time to take part in the final days of the war against Japan.
