Obiekt 172M
The Obiekt 172M was developed from the initail Obiekt 172 prototype over the period 1969-71. The tank was developed at the Kartsev / Venediktov Bureau at the "Vagonka" plant (UZTM) in Nizhniy Tagil, entering production there as the T-72 in 1973. The Obiekt 172M differed from the ealier Obiekt 172 in that the searchlight was moved to the right of the gun, a distinctive stereoscopic rangefinder was fitted and a machine gun mounted on the commander's hatch. Gill armour was installed over the upper tack run. The Obiekt 172M, powered by its newly developed V-46 582kW (780hp) diesel engine, could reach a road speed of 60km/hour. After trials service with the Soviet Army the Obiekt 172M entered production in 1973 as the T-72 "Ural" MBT.
