The SU-100 was introduced into service with the Red Army in 1944. Armed with a 100mm D-10S gun, developed from a naval gun, the SU-100 used a redesigned SU-85 casemate hull reconfigured to accept the new weapon. Because of the space taken up by the main armament, the commander was provided with a cupola which projected from the right side of the superstructure. The SU-100 was a very successful tank-killer, capable of despatching any German heavy tank at medium ranges. It remained in production until 1953 and served with the Soviet Army into the 1970's. The SU-100 underwent several post-war upgrades in line with those carried out on the T-34-85, leading to the Western (and entirely ficticious) designation SU-100M for post-war models fitted with a large stowage box mounted on the track guard in front of the commander’s cupola and with minor mechanical improvements. The Russian Army never made any model distinction when the post-war model was introduced, using rather a manufacture year suffix to designate all SU-100’s. The later model with the side stowage box appeared as early as 1946. In 1961 the SU-100 was modified with the installation of an uprated engine, IR driving lights, an oil pump box on the superstructure side behind the commander's cupola and the fitment of "starfish" road wheels. Most SU-100's in museums today have been upgraded before being retired.

This SU-100 was acquired, in a poor rusty condition, from the waste ground storage area at the Saumur Armour Museum, France, during 1984/5. It is believed that it may now be in storage at Erprobungstelle 51 at Meppen.
