The Carro Veloce (‘fast tank’) CV29 was a design based closely on the British Vickers Carden-Loyd Mark VI tankette, four of which were purchased by the Italian Army in 1929. Subsequent developments led to the CV33 series which was cheap and simple and found many export customers, including Albania, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Hungary and Spain. The CV33 was redesignated L3 in the late 1930s.

The first series of the L3/33 had a 6.5mm MG and a characteristic tension wheel mounted in a bracket attached to the rear idler wheel. The second series had the tension wheel separated from the idler and was armed with 2 x 8mm MGs as standard (this armament was later refitted to the first series).

It was supplied to Hungary and although on the front it carries an Italian Army registration number it was almost certainly never used by the Italian Army and so this number is unlikely to be genuine. This L3 was housed at the Caserma Santa Barbara in Milan until recently, and was previously displayed in at least one exhibition in Milan during the 1990s when it carried a placard for the “Assoc. Arma di Cavalleria, Sezione di Milano”. It has twin FIAT 35 8mm MGs and appears to be in good condition. Its current status and location are unknown. (Sources: D. Guglielmi, M. Viucci).

In 1938 the L3/38 was introduced with a new, stronger suspension system. A second series soon appeared with a driver’s episcope fitted, and the suspension changed again, this time using torsion bars and mounting larger spoked roadwheels. A number of examples of this second series were exported to Brazil when they were armed with a 13.2mm Breda MG.
Large numbers of the L3/38 were used in Italy, although many of these were rebuilt L3/33 and L3/35 vehicles. In total, across all models, some 2000 examples of the L3 were built for Italian use.
