The ISU-152 was developed in 1944 under the project designation Obiekt 241. It entered service with the Red Army the same year, slightly before the ISU-122. The ISU-152 was armed with a 152.4mm ML-20S howitzer which could despatch any German tank of the day by sheer projectile weight. The ISU-152 pre-dated the ISU-122 in service. Most ISU 152’s have an interlocked welded bow with a sharp angle while the ISU-122 usually has a more rounded cast bow. Several modifications of the ISU-152 were developed to prototype stage, including the Obiekt 246 (ISU-152-1) with a 152mm BL-8 howitzer and the Obiekt 247 (ISU-152-2) armed with the 152mm BL-10 howitzer. The ISU-152 ceased production in 1955. During the same year, the ISU-152 underwent a modernisation programme with improvements in the engine, transmission, fuel capacity and the provision of a 12.7mm DShK AA MG, reslting in the IS-152K.
