The BTR-50 APC tracked APC was developed concurrently with the PT-76 amphibious light tank on which it was based. The vehicle which was Russia's first operational fully tracked APC was developed under the designation Obiekt 750 from 1952 at ChTZ and was originally an open roofed design, but was latterly enclosed (as the BTR-50PK) as Soviet concepts of battle in an NBC environment were developed. The BTR-50P was fully amphibious, giving a significant operational advantage to Soviet TD's. The original BTR-50 began to enter service with the Soviet Army in 1954. The BTR-50 was replaced by the BMP-1 MICV but remained in combat reserves until as late as 1993.
