Text in original Preserved Tanks In Britain publication:
This Challenger 1 Mark 3 was commanded by General A. Denaro (then Colonel) during the first Gulf War. It carries the name ‘Churchill’, the traditional name for the Commanding Officer’s tank in the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars. It also displays the chevron device applied to all coalition vehicles during the war and the little red jerboa, or ‘Desert Rat’, of 7th Armoured Brigade. It does, however, lack the additional armour applied to these tanks while fighting in Iraq. It is in running order following restoration by ABRO. It took part in the Lord Mayor’s Show parade in London in 2004, plus Tankfests 2006 and 2009. The following crew names are painted on the Thermal Optical and Gunnery Sight (TOGS) housing:
COMD – LT/COL DENARO OP – CPL NUTT E019 GNR – L/CPL MCKENNA E026 DVR – TPR HAWKES E032 |
