This museum was opened in 1956 at El Alamein (Al Alamayn) to commemorate the Second World War battles that took place there, particularly the decisive Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. The British Eighth Army defeated the Afrika Korps and began a major advance that eventually led to overall victory in North Africa. The museum was renewed and reopened in 1992 and is now a major tourist attraction. There are halls inside the museum building depicting the weapons, equipment and experiences of the British and Commonwealth, German and Italian forces. Outside various vehicles and large weapons are displayed in a courtyard, mounted on stone plinths. These vehicles appear to have been put on display in the condition they were recovered from the battlefields around the museum.
