The KS was the first “Russian” tank, developed from the Renault M-17 by a team under the direction of F. Nefedov. The KS was produced at the Krasnoe Sormovo plant in Nizhniy Novgorod between 1920-21. During this time only 15 tanks were manufactured in total, all of which were individually named. The first tank, completed on 31st August 1920, was named "Borets Za Svobodu Tovarich Lenin" - "Fighter for the freedom of Comrade Lenin". The Red Army took delivery of the 15 tanks in May 1921. The KS used an AMO engine (based on a FIAT design) developing 33hp which gave the tank a maximum road speed of 9km/hour and a respectable range of 120km. The tank was important in being the first tank series produced in Russia, though the Russian KS tanks relied heavily on the Renault M-17 prototypes, some sources indicating that the KS tanks were in fact rebuilt Renault M-17’s rather than of entirely indigenous manufacture.
