The designation IS-3 was originally used for a heavy tank design developed at the end of 1944 by a team headed by N. L. Dukhov and M. F. Balshiy. The original IS-3 had a flat sloped glacis similar to the later IS-2 but the definitive IS-3, Obiekt 703, designated “Kirovets-1” during development had a more complex three piece nose. The IS-3 was manufactured at the relocated Kirov plant in Chelyabinsk (ChKZ). The IS-3 entered service with the Russian Army in January 1945 with 29 tanks having been built before the end of the war. The IS-3 did not see active service though it did arrive in Berlin in time for the Soviet victory parade where its appearance caused considerable concern among other Western allies regarding the advanced state of Russian tank technology. When introduced and for many years thereafter, the IS-3 represented a considerable threat to allied tank formations and led to heavy tank development programmes being rushed through in the UK and the US.
The IS-3 served with the Soviet Army from 1945 to 1959. Due to its distinctive nose it was nicknamed “Schuka” (Pike) in Soviet Army service.

IS-3M
The IS-3M underwent a modernisation programme, carried out at the Kirov plant in Leningrad between 1952 and 1953 with modernised IS-3M’s being produced as late as 1960. The modified IS-3 was developed under the designation Obiekt UKN-703. Improvements included an uprated V 54K IS engine which gave improved range of 450km, improved transmission and oil cooling, new sighting and vision devices. The use of side skirts was the most obvious external change which distinguishes the IS-3M.
