The SU-85 was developed in 1943, mating the Petrov design bureau’s D-5S gun with a new casemate hull on the T-34 chassis. It was produced at the Uralmash Tank Plant in August 1943. The SU-85 was developed to combat the recently encountered Panther and Tiger tanks prior to the introduction of the T-34-85 medium and the IS-2 heavy tanks. The SU-85 was called “Zveraboi”, literally a long grass but meaning “Animal Hunter” during wartime years, due to the type of German tank it successfully engaged in combat.
In total, 2050 SU-85's were built, with SU-85's being used post-war by Poland, Czechoslovakia, Korea and China.
