Text in original Preserved Tanks In Britain publication:
This Chieftain 2000 was on sale on the Witham’s website from about December 2009 to February 2010, when it was in running order. It is believed that it has since been sold; its current location and status are unknown. The original advertisement read: “This vehicle is the original trial vehicle which had been used by GEC Marconi to test the Centaur Fire Control System. The hull began life in service 1/05/67 and served with RAC centre at Bovington and with Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, 15/19th Kings Own Hussars and 1st Royal Tank Regiment. In 1993 it was transferred to GEC Marconi and there it was mated with the turret from the Chieftain 900 project. This had been a project to study the feasibility of upgrading Chieftain with Chobham armour and the Challenger engine. 2 vehicles were built: Chieftain 800 (so called as its pack was de-rated to 800 bhp) and Chieftain 900. The trial produced useful data but no sales so the vehicle was passed to Marconi. They chose to retain the turret but on a normal hull and this became Chieftain 2000 which is this vehicle. The vehicle is sold “as is” however we have had the vehicle running but it will require new batteries and a good check over and service before driving. Viewing is highly recommended.” If the turret on this vehicle is that of a Chieftain 900 then it has been modified as it appears to have a slightly different shape, for example it has a much deeper gunner’s sight recess.
