This vehicle began life as a Chieftain Mark 2 main battle tank, date in service 22 April 1968. It was subsequently upgraded to Mark 6-4C and spent most of its active service life in Germany. It was one of 17 Chieftain gun tanks converted to the armoured engineer role in Germany. The original design was worked out by the Royal Engineers Wing at Bovington in conjunction with 32 Armoured Engineer Regiment and once this was accepted it was passed on to 40 Army Engineer Support Group and 21 Engineer Base Workshops at Willich in Germany – hence the name of this first batch of AVREs. According to the museum vehicle record this Chieftain was built by Vickers-Armstrongs; however its record cards appear to indicate it was built by ROF Leeds. They also show that it served with the Blues and Royals in 1968 and the Life Guards in 1971. It was with 17 BVD in August 1972, 2 ADS in February 1973, and CVD Ludgershall in March/April 1973. Then it served with A Squadron 13/18 Hussars from May 1973, 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards from June 1975, and 3 RTR from September 1976. It underwent a conversion (presumably an upgrade) in 1976. Then it served with QRIH from July 1979, at 38 Central Workshop in June 1980, and back with QRIH in December 1980. It underwent another conversion before serving with 4 RTR in July 1982 and 5 Innis DG in November 1984. It then underwent another conversion (a ‘planned repair’) at 38 Central Workshop in May 1985, and was with RAC Training Regiment on January 1986. It underwent a final conversion – presumably to AVRE – from 27 January 1986. It was with 32 Armoured Engineer Regiment early in May 1987, and 77 Armoured Engineer Squadron from late May 1987. It is described as ‘Plinth Vehicle Bovington’ from January 1995. It was put on the museum books in 2006. It was in storage for some time but was moved to a display position near the arena.
