For most of the Twentieth Century the entire eastern part of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region was studded with static emplacements for defence against a possible invasion from Eastern Europe. These defences were begun before the First World War and gradually increased until the 1970s. They extended from the eastern borders with Austria and Slovenia westward to the Tagliamento River and were garrisoned after the Second World War by the Alpini Brigade Julia, specialising in mountain combat. In a number of cases the defences consisted of a tank, with its engine removed, emplaced inside a concrete structure as a form of pillbox or local strongpoint. The types of tank used were primarily the US M26 Pershing, but also the US M4 Sherman and the Italian M15/42. After the end of the Cold War most of these emplacements were dismantled, and some of the tanks have since been put on display elsewhere. However, a few remain in situ. (Source: Ferrea Mole).

This Sherman is embedded in a concrete base beside the main road leading up the hill west from the Dignano Bridge. It is missing its engine, running gear, main gun and other equipment, and its mantlet appears to have been modified to mount a machine-gun as main armament. It was surrounded by a wooden structure but this has been replaced in recent years by sheet metal.
