Developed as the Obiekt 242 prototype on the IS-2 heavy tank chassis, the ISU-122 entered service in 1944 and remained in production until 1947. Armed with a 122mm L/46.3 calibre gun the weapon had a direct fire range of 3800-5000m and an indirect fire artillery support range of 6200-14,300m. Later modifications of the ISU-122 included the Obiekt 249 ISU-122-2 (ISU-122S) armed with a 122mm D-25T tank gun in a ball mantlet which was series produced and the Obiekt 251 ISU-122-3 (ISU-122BM) prototype developed in 1944 which was armed with a 122mm S-26-1 naval gun which fired a 25kg shell at 1000m/s. These vehicles not enter production.
The ISU-122 was modernised post-war with engine and stowage improvements. The BTT-1 recovery vehicle was built on the ISU-122 chassis.
