It was not until the late 1960’s that serious attention was paid in Russia to the mechanisation of field artillery, previous self propelled guns such as the ISU-122 and ISU-152 having been designed as close-support weapons for tank units rather than mobile artillery. The 2S1 self propelled gun was the first in the new generation of self propelled field artillery. The 2S1 entered production in 1971 and was introduced into service with the Soviet Army in 1973. The 2S1's 122mm 2A31 gun had a maximum range of 15.2km and carried 40 rounds of ammunition on board. The vehicle was exported to most Warsaw Pact countries ad remains in service with the Russian Army today. The 2S1 was, as with all the new tracked SPG systems, was named after a flower.
