The SU-122 was a medium close support weapon which entered service with the Russian Army in 1942. It mounted the 122mm M-30 howitzer in a casemate hull which was in modified form also used for the SU-85. The size of the weapon required a large cast housing to be provided which, together with the short gun barrel distinguish the SU-122 from the more common SU-85. The SU-122 was designed as a close support artillery weapon and was not particularly effective in the tank killer role.
