Design work on the “Kub” (NATO: SAM-6 Gainful) low - medium altitude SAM system began as early as 1958. The 2P25 missile TEL vehicle was based on the GM-568 chassis, which was produced at the Mytischi plant from 1959, while the related 1S91 radar vehicle was based on a similar chassis. The 2K12 "Kub” system was tested at the Donguzsk Polygon in 1965-66 and entered service with the Soviet Army in 1967. The system was modernised in 1972 (2K12M1 / Kub M-1) and 1974 (2K12M3 / Kub M3). The 2K12 M4 Kub M4 was developed into the BUK-1 SAM system. The 2P25 was widely exported and used in several Middle East conflicts in addition to service with the Russian Army. The 2P25’s combat debut was in 1973, when it was used by Egypt and Syria during the “Yom Kippur” war against Israel.
