Russian troops always suffered throughout the war from inadequate anti-aircraft protection and the ZSU-37 was a belated attempt to provide an anti-aircraft version of the SU-76. A small production series of 70 vehicles was built between 1945 and 1948. The first vehicles took part in the Soviet Victory parade in Red Square in 1945. The Kubinka vehicle is one of the original prototypes, built on the original SU-76 chassis with parallel mounted engines and twin inspection hatches on the front glacis.
