Vauxhall were therefore asked to produce such a version of the Churchill Tank as an interim solution. Designated A43, it was initially known as Super Churchill but was later officially named Black Prince. Six prototypes were ordered and these were delivered for trials in May 1945, too late for hostilities. Production was cancelled as the much superior Centurion Tank was ready at the same time. This Black Prince was the fourth pilot model; from its D&M school markings it is presumed to have previously been at the Bovington Driving and Maintenance School. It was put on the museum books in 1949.
