ASTRA (Anonima Sarda Trasporti) S.p.A. is an Italian company which produces trucks, construction dump trucks, heavy transport vehicles and military vehicles. It was privately founded in 1946 in Cagliari by Mario Bertuzzi, for the reconditioning of military vehicles left over from the war. In 1951 ASTRA moved to Piacenza, into a facility of 15,000 square metres, to conduct the reconditioning of tracked vehicles (primarily Sherman tanks, and later M47 Patton tanks). From 1955 ASTRA began to construct civilian vehicles, beginning with the BM1 dumper, and later also making concrete mixer trucks and chassis. Until 1986 the company belonged to the Bertuzzi family, but then became a member of Iveco, part of the Fiat Group. Tanks that have undergone maintenance in the ASTRA facilities have the company’s name marked on a data plate welded to the rear hull. It typically reads as follows:
ASTRA S.p.A. PIACENZA – ITALIA REVISIONE GENERALE DATA: [stamped date] NO. [stamped ID] |
