Pleszew was liberated from German occupation on 24 January 1945. On that date a tank entered the market square and was destroyed by a German soldier with a mine. The crew were killed. About a month later a further tragedy followed when children playing on the tank accidentally set off the ammunition, and a further dozen people were killed. This incident is marked by a plaque on the market square. In the south-east of the town a tank is on display; this is presumed to be as a war memorial.
