Shek Kong Barracks (previously Sek Kong Barracks) is located on Route Twisk, between Tseun Wan and Kam Tin in the New Territories. It was a significant base for the British Army after the Second World War and appears to be the sole barracks used for the British Army’s tank forces in Hong Kong. Since the handover of Hong Kong to China the barracks have been taken over by the Chinese People’s Libaration Army.
Comet tanks first arrived in Hong Kong in 1949 with the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment. They were then used by the 7th Royal Tank Regiment (from late 1951 to 1955) and the 7th Queen’s Own Hussars (from 1955 to 1957). They finally served with 1st Royal Tank Regiment, which was the last British regular regiment to be equipped with Comets, before being replaced by Centurion tanks from 1959.
Identified registrations of Comets that served in Hong Kong (source: VRNARMY2/MAFVA.net) are 10ZR20 (A Sqn, 1RTR, 1957), 13ZR68, 13ZR69 (7RTR at Sek Kong, 1952), 15ZR36 (A Sqn, 1RTR, 1957), 17ZR44 (7RTR at Sek Kong, 1952), 21ZR49 (A Sqn, 1RTR, 1957) and 21ZR52 (A Sqn, 1RTR, 1957). Others seen in photographs (source: Gwulo.com) include 10?ZR35, 15ZR73, 20ZR54 and 20ZR71 (name: “SFAX”?), and (source: 1RTR) 16ZR55.
It has been suggested that Comets decommissioned from Hong Kong were the source of vehicles that later served with the Irish Defence Forces (source: FineScale).
