Back in the fifties and early sixties, the Hinterrhein shooting range was used extensively by the Swiss armed forces. The modern tank shooting range was developed in 1965. It is situated at an altitude of 1640m in an Alpine mountain range, the valley floor of the Hinterrhein river which is just 6km from its source. The valley is surrounded on three sides by steep hillsides, producing an ideal safe range area. The infrastructure was expanded in 1982 and 1983 with additional buildings including mountain accommodation and a workshop building, and again from 1999 with the installation of mechanised target systems and other improvements. Armoured units have priority on the range for firing practice on tanks between April and November. The range is also used for anti-tank unit training, plus infantry weapon firing (including small-arms and mortars).
