Vimy House was a warehouse in western Ottawa used to store most of the collection of the Canadian War Museum. Originally built as Ottawa’s streetcar garage, it was turned over to the war museum when its Sussex Drive building ran out of storage and office space. The building was filled with a vast array of aged military paraphernalia, from large tanks down to many thousands of medals. It was also home to the world’s largest collection of Canadian war art. While items from the Vimy House collection would occasionally be put on display at the museum itself, the public could also visit Vimy House on special open house days and tour its collection. In 2005, the new War Museum at LeBreton Flats was opened. This war museum has enough room for storage, and so Vimy House was abandoned. The last open house was held on September 6, 2003. (Source: Wikipedia). In 2003 the following vehicles were listed as being stored in Vimy House: Centurion, Chaffee, Chieftain, CV33, FT17 [sic – M1917], Grizzly (M4A1), M3 Lee, M4A2E8 Sherman, M4A4 Sherman, PzKfw I, PzKfw II, PzKfw IV [sic – Panzer IV/70], Ram C/OP, Stug III, T-34/85, T-72, Abbot, Sexton, BMP-R, RSO, Tracked Jeep, Weasel, Universal Carriers, Wasp Flame Thrower, Great Eastern Ramp (source: Armorama). In 2006/7 the Vimy House building was converted into a self-storage warehouse by Metcalfe Realty Company Limited (source: Ottawa Business Journal).
