The Trizio barracks in Altamura are home to the 31º Reggimento Carri (Italian 31st Tank Regiment). The unit was formed in 1937 in Siena. In April 1939 it formed part of the Centauro armoured division and transferred to Albania. There it received M13/40 tanks before returning to Italy in September 1941. In November 1942 it moved to North Africa, and later took part in operations in Tunisia. It was disbanded partially in April 1943, and completely at the armistice. 31º Reggimento Carri was reconstituted in September 1951. It went through various reorganisations in line with changes in the whole Italian armed forces until being reconstituted in 1993 in Bellinzago Novarse. On 10 October 1995 it transferred to Altamura, and forms part of the Pinerolo mechanised brigade.
