Camps and barracks grew around the city leading to the establishment of a major arsenal from 1880. This became a munitions factory and one of the largest establishments of Bologna increasing in size until it reached a peak of 12,000 workers in 1918, many of them women, though the end of the war led to the collapse of the local defence industry. Plans in the inter-war period to turn the area over to civilian use came to nothing and in the last years of the Second World War it was under the control of German troops, though by April 1945 it was in the possession of Italian partisans. After the war it was again in use by the military. 1947 saw the creation of ‘Officina Riparazione Mezzi Corazzati’ (ORMeC), a workshop for the repair of armoured vehicles. Over time the number of workers in the area grew, though increasingly they were engaged in private industrial facilities, a process that had begun before the war. Nonetheless the area’s connection with the army remained an important part of Bologna’s economic and social history through the remainder of the twentieth century. In 1978 ORMeC became ‘Stabilimento Veicoli da Combattimento’ (Combat Vehicle Establishment) which is abbreviated STA.VE.CO, but often written ‘Staveco’, and this became the local name for this area. The name remains despite a later merger of the establishment with ‘Stabilimento Ceicoli da Trasporto’ (Transport Vehicle Establishment, STA.VE.TRA) in 1990 and a later name change to ‘Stabilimento Materiali per la Motorizzazione’ (Motorised Equipment Establishment, STAMOTO). Since the closure of the military facilities in 2003 the area has been given over to civilian use. Vehicles maintained at ORMeC included M47 tanks of the Italian Army, and after rework they were marked by the addition of an ‘ORMeC Bologna’ data plate welded on the hull rear.
