On 17 January 1945 in the morning Soviet tanks entered Skierniewice; one of them was hit in the vicinity of the railway station, as a result of the hit the entire crew perished (source: Skierniewice.com). That tank now forms part of a monument to the liberation of the town from the Nazi occupation.
During the Communist era there was a scandal when a group returning from a night’s celebrations turned the tank’s turret so that it was directed toward the nearest building. The police began an investigation but the perpetrators of the crime were not caught. The turret was welded in position. (Source: Geocaching.com).
For many years the celebration of the anniversary of the liberation from Nazi occupation was held at the monument. Since the end of the Communist era there has been some controversy over linking the celebrations to a symbol of Soviet occupation.
The monument consists of a tank mounted on a sloped stone plinth. On the front of the plinth a plaque reads:
