The area around Wołomin, north-east of Warsaw, was the site of a great tank battle in the summer of 1944, part of Operation Bagration, as the Soviet Army attempted to reach Warsaw. There is now a memorial there ‘In honour of the heroic soldiers of 2 Guards Tank Army and of the Polish Underground who on 30 July – 6 August 1944 fought in the Wołomin area against the Nazis’.
