Krauss-Maffei was formed in 1931 from the merger of the two Munich firms of Maffei (founded 1838) and Krauss & Co. (founded 1860). Both belonged to the leading German makers of locomotives of various types. Maffei also built other steam-operated vehicles and, later, manufactured vehicles with combustion engines, including locomotives and buses. In 1939 Krauss-Maffei was given the job of developing the chassis of the PzKpfw I Ausf C (VK601), and, in addition to the prototype, had built a development series of 40 vehicles by 1943. Similarly, also in 1939, Krauss-Maffei was given a development order for a batch of 30 PzKfpw I Ausf D (VK1801) vehicles which was completed in 1942. In 1963 the company started production of the Leopard tank, and in 1973 production of Leopard 2. In 1999 the company fused with Mannesmann DEMAG. The production of armoured vehicles was merged with the company Wegmann to form Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG (KMW). Krauss-Maffei remains an injection molding machine manufacturer and defence company producing various types of equipment as well as railroad locomotives, tanks, self-propelled artillery and other armoured vehicles.
