The Pressed Steel Car Company came into existence 17 February 1899 for the purpose of manufacturing passenger, freight and street railway cars and to make trucks, wheels, and other parts of cars. It was an amalgamation of the Schoen Pressed Steel Company of Woods Run, Pittsburgh, and the Fox Solid Pressed Steel Company, with factories at McCandless Avenue, Pittsburgh, and Joliet, 30 miles south-west of Chicago. Later another large factory was constructed at McKees Rocks, Pittsburgh. Another plant, on Torrance Avenue in Chicago’s Hegewisch neighbourhood, was originally the factory of United States Rolling Stock Company (USRS Co.).
In 1940 Pressed Steel as a whole started to produce large quantities of tanks and allied war materials for the war effort, and it received an award for its excellent job in producing tanks on 10 September 10 1942. From 1942 through 1945, many women started to work in heavy industry. In 1951 Pressed Steel also won an Army contract to build tanks, with production taking place in its Hegewisch plant. In 1956, Pressed Steel was bought by U.S. Steel after it went out of business and closed. U.S. Steel used the property as a supply warehouse and the site currently is occupied by a number of small businesses.
Some sources indicate that M4A3 tanks were built by Pressed Steel Car at Hegewisch, others that they were made by Ford Motor Company (location not given); it is known they were not made by Ford at Hegewisch (source: Hegewisch FAQ). Currently Ford-manufactured vehicles are included here.
