The fort of Pré-Giroud is built into the hills above the village of Le Day, a couple of kilometres east of the town of Vallorbe. It overlooks Switzerland’s eastern border with France and was intended to prevent the passage of enemy forces through the Col de Jougne mountain pass and to provide support to border troops. It was acquired by the ‘Amis du Fort de Vallorbe (Pré-Giroud)’ (Friends of the Fort) in 1988 after being declassified by the Swiss Army. It consists of six blockhouses in a casemate, interconnected with ammunition stores, and engine room and barracks, all built into the rock. There are also three independent bunkers plus barbed wire entanglements.
