The Obiekt 167 was developed in 1961. The tank was developed as a possible replacement for the original T-62. Thugh resembling the original T-62, the Obiekt 167 had a modified hull rear, engine deck and six road wheels per side. The tank also mounted a 9K11 ATGM system on the turret rear, armed wth three 9M14 (AT-3 Sagger) ATGM's.

The Obiekt 167GTD was a gas turbine engined version of the Obiekt 167, developed in 1965. The tank was a derivative of the original Obiek 167, mounting a gas turbine engine.
