The ASU-85 airborne self-propelled gun was developed as an air-portable anti-tank and close support weapon, providing heavier firepower than afforded by the air-droppable ASU-57. The ASU-85 entered service with Soviet VDV (airborne) forces in 195. It was widely used by the VDV in the 1960’s, its most famous excursion being during the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The ASU-85 was replaced in service by the BMD-1 I the 1970's.
