The T-70 light tank was introduced in 1942 as a production replacement for the T-60. The original T-70 was produced with a parallel engine arrangement; however this was quickly replaced by a later T-70M model, introduced in September 1942, with uprated (85hp) GAZ-203 engines mounted in tandem and with an improved turret. The latter model was originally designated T-70M, but due to the small number of original T-70’s produced this suffix was subsequently dropped, all tanks latterly being described as T-70, of which there were three distinct production models. The three distinct production models can be differentiated by their differing drive sprockets, front hatches and vision devices.
Numerous vehicles were produced on the base of the T-70, including the SU-76 (SU-15) and SU-76M (SU-15M) SPG’s, the ZSU-37 and T-90 SPAAG’s and the T-80 light tank. The T-80 was an up-armoured variant manufactured in small numbers. Several variants of the T-70 with up-rated armament were also developed to prototype stage.
In May 1999 a T-70 turret was put on display at the Poklonnaya Gora Victory Park museum in Moscow, mounted on a fabricated stand; this may be the same T-70 turret recovered by the Ekipazh (“Crew”) enthusiasts group from a boggy wood elsewhere in Russia.
