There are photographs on the ShermanTank.nl website showing a very similar M4A1 (with muzzle brake and tracks still fitted, and bearing the same or a very similar turret serial number) on a firing range in 1972; it is therefore presumed that this vehicle was previously a range target.
The “701” in a triangle indicates 701st Cavalry Regiment (source: Pantser.net).
