It was built in October 1918 by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow. All but the pilot model were transferred direct from the factory to Wool by rail a few months after the Armistice, driven from the station to Bovington camp, and then dumped on the heath at Bovington (source: Chamberlain & Ellis/Tank Mark VIII). They were eventually all scrapped except this one which was retained for the museum. It was put on the museum books in 1949. For many years it was displayed outside, in front of the museum. It is currently displayed with its right door open so the interior can be viewed.
