The Scuola Truppe Corazzate (Armoured Troops School) was established in the Ferrari Orsi barracks in Caserta on 1 July 1951. From 1 January 1964 to 14 September 1975 it also incorporated the AUC School of Mechanised Troops of Lecce. During this time the school was named Scuola Truppe Meccanizzate e Corazzate (STMC), or School of Mechanised and Armoured Troops. The STMC was the organisation that carried out training of all military personnel working on tanks and other armoured vehicles. The school was home to a number of armoured units and contained various training areas and a firing range. In 1991 the Armoured Troops School became the Scuola di Carrismo, and transferred to Lecce.
Training at Caserta included theory lessons on various technical subjects, exercises and basic specialist training (including driving on a vehicle simulator, gunnery and mechanics). The tanks used were the American M47 Patton and M60, and the German Leopard 1. Large scale exercises took place at two camps near Persano, in Salerno.
Caserta was a significant location for Italian armour. As well as housing the School, it was also a location where tanks were maintained and upgraded by the Officine Fiore S.M.C. organisation. Tanks undergoing a major upgrade typically have this name marked on a data plate welded to the rear hull.
