The Historical Cavalry Museum was opened in a public ceremony in 1968. It aims to tell the story of the Italian Cavalry, its battles, history and glories. It has many rooms and galleries depicting the story of military horseriding, knights and cavalry with displays of uniforms, weapons and other memoribilia. Vehicles in the collection are displayed in galleries on the ground floor.
The museum was founded by the Society of Friends of the Historical Cavalry Museum, formed in 1958 with the aim of creating a national military museum in Pinerolo. The initiative had been successful and the museum was established in the same headquarters building that for about 100 years had housed the School of Cavalry, world famous for its success in equestrian sports. In 1986 control of the museum passed to the General Staff of the Army and was later incorporated as a department; currently it is part of the Northern Turin Military Region. The Friends continue their work in acquisitions, research, publications and other services.
