The artillery positions of the Mondascia Forts, near Biasca in the Riviera Valley, were constructed during the Second World War (1939-1945). They were operational and therefore secret until 1995, and were constantly updated until their declassification. They were intended to strengthen the artillery support of the “LONA”, an impressive line of fixed defences against an attack by an enemy into the south of Switzerland. They are now being conserved, and are open to visits by the public.
