On May 24 1997, fifty years after the implementation of the Marshall Plan, the Marshall Museum in Zwijndrecht was opened by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General G. A. Joulwan (USA). The museum, named after George C. Marshall, contained a collection of over 300 military vehicles. Early in 2006 the collection moved to the Liberty Park at Overloon, and the Zwijndrecht museum closed.
The founder of the collection, Jaap de Groot, started a small steel construction company named De Groot Construction in 1948.
After the Marshall Museum closed, Jaap de Groot continued to deal in military vehicles through his company Army Cars. In about 2008 a new museum was created on the site of the old Marshall Museum and known as the Army Cars Museum. Its collection consisted mostly of post-war US, European and Soviet vehicles.
Jaap de Groot died in April 2011 at the age of 88 (source: M. Krauss). The Army Cars collection has been sold off.
